The Patterson is a family-owned historic estate on the Mississippi River in Algiers, just minutes from New Orleans. Originally built in 1931 as a U.S. Public Health Service Quarantine Station, the property has now been carefully restored as a private destination for weddings, retreats, celebrations, and meaningful gatherings.
Haas Landscape Studio worked alongside the owners to translate their vision for the grounds into a practical, phased landscape plan. From the first conceptual master plan and rough budget through design development and installation, the process centered on protecting the character of the historic property while creating an inviting, functional setting for the life now unfolding there.
The owners remained closely involved in the work, carrying portions of the installation forward themselves while Haas handled the more technical site improvements: grading, drainage, irrigation, bed preparation, gravel surfaces, steel edging, and coordination of the central water feature.
A large gravel courtyard now creates flexible space for outdoor events, while layered planting and garden infrastructure soften the restored buildings and connect the different areas of the estate. At its center, a custom fountain built around a historic limestone millstone offers a quiet focal point.
The result is a landscape designed to feel both relaxed and intentional: a setting that respects the property’s history while making room for the gatherings, celebrations, and memories still to come.
